Clopay Cable & Drum Replacement: The Denver Owner’s Guide

Clopay doors are common here, especially in Stapleton, Highlands Ranch, and the newer builds around Central Park where the builder-grade EZ-Set torsion systems were spec’d heavily from 2015 to 2020. The drums on those systems are smaller-diameter and the cables shorter than standard, which matters when you’re matching parts.

Which Clopay Models This Applies To

Clopay uses two main drum families: the standard-lift 400-8 and 400-12 drums for doors up to 8 or 12 feet tall, and the low-headroom 164L drums found in tighter garages common in older Denver neighborhoods like Wash Park or Berkeley. The EZ-Set system, which Clopay shipped on many entry-level doors, uses a proprietary drum with a narrower hub and a fixed cable length of roughly 99 inches for a 7-foot door. Measure wrong and the cable winds unevenly or slips off the grooves entirely.

To identify what you have: check the sticker on the interior panel (usually upper left) for the model series, Classic, Gallery, or Canyon Ridge. Then look at the drum itself. Standard drums are stamped with the part number; EZ-Set drums often carry only a Clopay logo and a date code. We carry both OEM Clopay drums and the DURA-LIFT aftermarket equivalents, which match the groove geometry and pass our load testing. For most residential doors in Denver, the aftermarket option holds up fine and saves you roughly $30-$50 on the part cost. On heavier insulated doors, especially the 2-inch polyurethane models that see full sun exposure in Park Hill or Hilltop, we lean toward OEM for the tighter tolerance.

One compatibility gotcha: Clopay’s newer Intellicore doors shipped with drums that have a slightly wider bore to accommodate the thicker shaft. If your door was built after 2019, bring the old drum in or text us a photo. We’ll match it before we dispatch.

Signs Your Clopay Cable & Drum Replacement Is Failing

• The door hangs crooked when opening or closing. One cable has stretched or slipped on its drum, so that side of the door lags. In Denver’s dry climate, cable corrosion is less common than in coastal cities, but the freeze-thaw cycles from October through April can stiffen the lubricant and cause uneven winding.
• A loud bang or pop from the garage, then the door won’t move. The cable snapped under load. On Clopay doors with EZ-Set springs, this often happens when the spring is also near failure and the cable takes the full tension spike.
• Visible fraying or broken strands on the cable. The 1/8-inch aircraft-grade cable on most residential Clopay doors should show clean, tight winding. If you see bird-caging or rust-colored dust near the bottom bracket, the cable is degrading internally.
• The drum wobbles or clicks as the door moves. The set screws have loosened or the drum bore has wallowed out from years of torque. We see this on original hardware in pre-2000 homes along South Pearl Street where the torsion springs hadn’t been touched since the nineties.
• The cable slips off the drum repeatedly after “fixing” it. The drum grooves are worn past spec, or the cable diameter no longer matches the groove pitch. Re-seating a cable on a worn drum is a temporary patch, not a repair.

DIY or Call Us?

Here’s where we’ll draw the line honestly. You can safely inspect: look for fraying, check whether the door hangs level, and confirm the cables sit in the drum grooves without crossing. You can also lubricate the torsion assembly lightly with a silicone-based spray. What you should not do is unbolt a cable under tension, loosen drum set screws while the spring is wound, or attempt to rewind a cable onto a drum by hand. The torsion spring stores enough energy to cause serious injury if the winding bar slips or the cable snaps free.
