DIY or Call Us?

There’s a safe middle ground here. A homeowner can inspect rollers from inside the garage with the door closed: look for cracked wheels, bent stems, or rollers sitting at an angle in the track. If the door is in the down position, the springs are not under tension at that roller location, so visual inspection carries minimal risk.

Where DIY goes wrong is trying to swap rollers on a door with the springs still wound. The bottom roller sits in a bracket under constant spring tension, and the second roller from the bottom is only marginally safer. Even with the door clamped, an unwinding spring or slipped winding bar can drop a section with serious force. We don’t recommend homeowners work on loaded hardware.
